Leeds in the lead to reach 4th round at the 12th attempt

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa was left to rue a missed penalty by debutant Jon Toral just moments before his side took the lead.

However, the Spaniard soon had his revenge in a goalkeeping mistake as West Ham belatedly snatched a 1-1 draw after being held for over half an hour.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah put Leeds ahead with a thunderous shot which split the visitors’ defence on the half-hour mark.

But a missed penalty by Toral gifted West Ham a lifeline, as Manchester United loanee Andy Carroll headed home after 29 minutes.

When Toral missed from close range in the dying minutes of the first half, Bielsa opted to bring on defensive midfielder Maxime Colin, without sanctioning it via the official video assistant referee.

And with minutes remaining, Real Betis loanee Anthony Wordsworth pushed the ball in from close range to reduce the deficit at Elland Road.

Instead, West Ham piled on the pressure and slotted the late winner past Leeds goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes on 81 minutes.

Had Toral netted in the first half, Bielsa’s men could have defended their lead from the penalty spot, as the Spaniard played at West Ham last season.
