Haiti Fast Facts

Haiti was one of the poorest countries in the world in 2014. Nearly 80% of Haitians live under the poverty line and less than 2% have access to health care. Many Haitians live in extreme poverty with less than 20% of families living below the poverty line. The number of children under five with moderate to extreme malnutrition (below 50% of the World Health Organization’s low-income cut-off) increased from 6,900 in 2010 to 6,965 in 2014. The rate of severe acute malnutrition was more than doubled from 2% in 2010 to 5% in 2014.

About half of children under five are wasted (defined as a body-weight-for-height of below -2 standard deviation (SD) below the World Health Organization’s reference median). Nearly 4,000 children under five die each year due to malnutrition, and more than 40% of those deaths are in the first six months of life.
